Michael Genovese, 45, was first stopped by Officers Robert Herman and Matthew Pompa on Tuesday, Nov. 5, for driving the wrong way on a one-way street, said Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.
During the stop, the officers noticed that there was a snowblower and other equipment in the back of his Toyota 4Runner, but thought nothing of it, Conklin said.
Later that same day, Stamford Police received a call from the Stamford Marriott Hotel and Spa reporting that some $5,000 in equipment had been stolen from a shed overnight, Conklin said.
Some of the items stolen included a Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm snowblower, a chainsaw, a trimmer, and a 36-inch sweeper.
When the Property Crimes unit put out a bulletin for the stolen items, the two officers remembered seeing the snowblower and other items in the back of Genovese's vehicle.
A look at their camera footage confirmed they were most likely the items stolen from the hotel, Conklin added.
The hotel also had video surveillance that clearly showed Genovese's face and his truck and license plate number.
“We were able to identify him quite quickly due to the surveillance available,” Conklin said.
Genovese was arrested on Thursday, Nov. 7, and charged with larceny, burglary, and criminal mischief. He is being held on a $75,000 bond, Conklin said.
